THE PROS + CONS OF A PIXIE CUT

I first got my hair chopped off on May 11, 2019. At the time, I had gone for a slightly layered pixie that still had some length to it. However, like MOST things, I got very bored (and somewhat annoyed) with the cut and decided to go shorter for convenience sake. Fast forward to today where my hair is now shaved on the sides (with a #3 blade) with a bit extra on top. While I absolutely LOVE my pixie, there are some days when I absolutely hate it. But if you're considering taking the leap and trying one out for yourself, I've formulated a list of pros and cons to help make the decision a little easier for you. Let's get into it, shall we?

PRO #1 - LESS MAINTENANCE
With less hair, you're obviously not going to have to deal with the hassle of having to wake up in the morning and straighten/curl your hair. Although, depending on the length of pixie that you go for, you may have to, especially if you have naturally wavy or curly hair and want a straighter look. For me, with my hair being as short as it is, all I really have to do is wake up in the morning, give it a good tousle and a little *swoop* in the front and I'm good to go! Except for when it's starting to grow out and no matter how I sleep, it ends up looking like this (excuse the face, I had just woken up XD):

But honestly, the amount of time that it takes to shampoo & condition, dry and style a pixie is INSANE compared to the amount of time it takes to do all of those things with longer hair. I maybe spent 20-30 minutes styling my shoulder-length hair in the mornings. Now? It doesn't even take me 5 minutes to get the look I want for the day. Now that's what I'm talking about!
CON #1 - CRAZY HAIR *EXAMPLE PICTURED ABOVE*
If you're someone who isn't entirely sure if they want to go for a drastic cropped pixie (like the one I have now), then "crazy hair" may be your worst enemy. I've found that a few weeks after I get my hair cut, when it's in that stage between being freshly cut and being "too long," it starts to stick up in the mornings, requiring me to put in some added effort to make myself NOT look like Alfalfa. Although, when this happens, I usually just wet my hair (or wash it if it's gotten especially greasy) and simply run a brush through it to get it to lay the way I want it to. So REALLY, it's only a con if you don't wanna have to worry about waking up with hair sticking up in all different directions *shrug.*
PRO #2 - IT MAKES YOU LOOK OLDER
I know it sounds RIDICULOUS, but when I got my pixie the first time around, there was a noticeable change in how I looked age wise. Even my hairdresser joked to my mother that she was taking home a twenty-year-old instead of an eighteen-year-old (even though my face in the second picture makes me look like a six-year-old). And not only does it make me look older, but it just makes me FEEL older. I'm not entirely sure why this is (I'm not a hair expert, sorry), but my best guess is that it has something to do with how the cut shows off your facial features, especially if it's a shorter cut like the one I'm rocking right now.

CON #2 - ONLY ONE WAY TO STYLE IT
Even when I had shoulder-length hair (which I *sometimes* miss, but not always), I wasn't a huge fan of experimenting with different hairstyles. I maybe did a top knot on three different occasions? And that's just because I didn't feel like constantly wearing it up (which, by the way, is why I chopped off all my hair to begin with. Why have so much of it when I just threw it up in a ponytail every day?).
Anyway, when you have a pixie, there's not really an opportunity to experiment with different hairstyles. Sure, if you have a longer pixie, you can experiment with different accessories like clips, headbands, etc. But if you have a more cropped pixie like mine, you're basically stuck with the same hairstyle. Every. Single. Day. Don't get me wrong, I love my hairstyle. It's simple and easy to maintain in the mornings when I wake up. But sometimes I wish I still had shoulder-length hair because at least with that, you can do MORE with it, you know?
PRO #3 - NO MORE HAIR IN YOUR FACE
I don't know about you, but having long hair was real pain in the a** sometimes. I absolutely HATED going into work when I straightened my hair sometimes because it was constantly getting in my face and just ruining the general flow of things. But a pixie? You never have to worry about that getting in the way. Unless, of course, you do what I did in the beginning and go for a longer pixie. But with the cut that I have now, there's no hair falling into my face. There's no hair that gets swept up in the wind and thrown in my face. I'm free to do whatever I want without having to worry about my hair, which I love.
CON #3 - GROWING IT OUT
I'm sure you've all noticed how long it takes to grow even half of an inch of your hair back after a haircut. It's not exactly a speedy process. But if you're looking to grow your hair out from a pixie? You could be looking at anywhere from 6-9 months before you get your hair to grow into a short bob. But if you're looking for a length that can easily be thrown up in a ponytail, you could be looking at a little over a year before that length is there. That's right, I've done my research.
And don't get me started on how irritating it can be trying to grow your hair out. I've tried to tough it out between haircuts (which I get every 6-8 weeks because I have zero patience for the "growing out" stage) but have failed because I HATE when it starts to grow out from what it had been trimmed to. Especially when it gets to the point where I've got what sometimes appears to be a rat tail on the back of my head from the hair on the back growing faster than the hair on top. Ah, FUN TIMES.

Long story short, I love my pixie. Does it get on my nerves? Sure. But I think I'd much rather have a pixie than have to deal with straightening shoulder-length hair like I had before. Having a pixie has been SOOOOOO much easier to maintain and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
Hopefully this post has given you the reasons you need to get a pixie cut (or to not get one, who knows). I highly recommend it :)
As usual, thanks for reading and make sure to leave me a comment below on whether or not you'll be taking the pixie plunge this coming year.
Until next time :)
